Take 5 With Jan Aggerbeck of Cape Cod Coffee

June 24, 2021

What is the name of your business? What services and/or goods does it provide? How long have you owned it?

Cape Cod Coffee. We are a coffee roasting company in Mashpee, and we provide wholesale coffee to cafes, hotels, resorts, restaurants and more. We have also expanded to open three Cape Cod Coffee retail locations:

Cape Cod Coffee Roasting Facility in Mashpee off of Route 130: Cafe, fresh donuts and pastries daily, kitchen with pizza, wings, sandwiches and more, full bar with 16 local beers on tap and much more!

Cape Cod Coffee Cafe in the Mashpee Commons: Cafe, full-service breakfast and lunch, full bar with specialty cocktails like our mimosa flights, cotton candy mimosas and Bloody Mary’s!

Cape Cod Coffee Poppy, our new seasonal location at the Popponesset Marketplace: Cafe, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, fresh pastries, cold brew by the gallon, whole bean coffee bags and much more!

What makes your business stand out? What has allowed you to grow?

One thing that makes Cape Cod Coffee stand out is our involvement with the local community. Whether it’s being the coffee sponsor for a local charity or hosting a charity event at our location, we are constantly looking for ways to give back to those in need on Cape Cod. We are proud of our “Coffee for a Cause” line of coffees we sell at our locations, where portions of the proceeds from all bags sold go directly to the local charities. The current charities we are supporting are Heroes in Transition, Independence House, Cape Abilities and the Association to Preserve Cape Cod.

How did the pandemic impact your business?

Like most other small businesses and restaurants on the Cape, the pandemic made day-to-day operations challenging. One of our major issues is finding staffing, however we have also seen issues like increases in cost of goods. We are fortunate with our customers who supported us throughout the past year and a half, with things like take-out orders and purchasing gift cards. We are happy to live in such a supportive community here on Cape Cod!

There are many indicators that the Cape is in for an especially strong summer season. Are you getting that sense? Have you been able to staff sufficiently?

We have certainly seen a lot of customers this season so far, and are definitely expecting numbers to increase. We have tried to staff our locations the best we can, however we are still short-staffed in many areas including our kitchens. We are so excited for tourists to come and visit Cape Cod this summer, however we are imploring them to be patient with our staff who are working hard to provide the best customer service possible!

Why do you use a payroll service, and why a local one?

Cape Cod Coffee is all about supporting local business. We love using a local payroll company because that means we can keep jobs on Cape Cod and better our local, year-round economy. We love when customers choose Cape Cod Coffee over other “chain” coffee shops, so whenever possible we make the choice to use local companies here on the Cape.
